Although races took place in Bromsgrove at Cliff Rock Road in Lickey, near Rubery, as early as 1782, the earliest occasion when races were actually billed as ‘Rubery Races’ was in 1899. The inaugural meeting was held on Tuesday 23rd May 1899 in fields adjacent to the Rose and Crown, Lickey and were well attended. The meeting was deemed to be a success and a second meeting was held on 11th September 1899. Despite the success of that meeting it still proved difficult to attract sufficient runners, and a final attempt was made on Tuesday 4th June 1901, but to no avail as only six horses contested the five race programme.
